As of late 2017, Barich was the Taliban shadow minister of foreign affairs and managed Taliban relations with Iran.
Since at least 2006, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – Quds Force (IRGC-QF) officers provided weapons to Barich.
Mohammad Naim Barich was a member of the Taliban “Gerdi Jangal Council” as of June 2008 and a member of the Taliban Military Commission as of March 2010.
Barich has been the Taliban member responsible for Helmand Province, Afghanistan from 2008. He is the former deputy of Akhtar Mohammad Mansour Shah Mohammed, a prominent Taliban leadership board figure. Barich controls a military base in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border area.
He provided funds through Rahat Ltd. for subordinate commanders to plan and conduct insurgent operations in southern Afghanistan.

Barich is the Taliban’s “shadow governor” of Helmand (a term used by insurgents in their campaign to establish parallel administrations in territory they control).
Barich is deeply involved in the heroin trade and had issued a decree ordering his followers to launch attacks to disrupt a plan announced by Helmand’s provincial government in January 2012, to eradicate poppy crops.
He is involved in many levels of the heroin and opium drug trade, including leading meetings with drug traffickers, controlling opium production, and owning his own drug loads.
