Gadahn, who converted to Islam from Christianity in 1995 at a California mosque, was described as “homegrown,” meaning that he had converted to an ideology so firmly that he was willing to harm his country of origin.
Adam was an American senior operative, cultural interpreter, spokesman and media advisor for the Islamist group al-Qaeda. Since 2004, he had appeared in a number of videos produced by al-Qaeda as “Azzam the American”. In one of the videos he appears with Al Qaeda’s second-in-command, Ayman Al-Zawahiri.
Gadahn declared his animosity towards the United States by declaring it “enemy soil” and praising the individuals responsible for the September 11 attacks. In one video he also said, American “streets will run red with blood.”
The first production of al-Qaeda’s media division in 2001, As-Sahab, was believed to have been with Adam’s involvement. It is also believed that he had attended an Al Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan and worked as a translator for several of the organization’s leaders, including senior lieutenant Abu Zebeida.
