Imam Bukhari Jamaat

Imam Bukhari Jamaat (Katibat Imam al Bukhari), also known as Katibat al-Imam Bukhari is an active terrorist group formed in 2013.

Ideology:

The Imam Bukhari Jamaat is an Uzbek jihadist group aligned in Syria with Jabhat al-Nusrah (JN), Ahrar al Sham, Sayfullakh Shishani’s jamaat (a second Uzbekistan jihadist group in Syria), and the Army of Emigrants and Supporters (aka Jaish al Muhajireen wal Ansar).

It is most recently pledged to Taliban leader Mullah Omar, a move that came in November 2014, after a small number of their ranks pledged to IS’ Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. However, it remains independent, training its own fighters and fighting in Layramoun and Az Zahraa in northwest Aleppo, Syria.

Organization:

The Jamaat is comprised of fighters from the Caucasus Emirate. The Syrian and Afghan branches of KIB have sworn allegiance to Mullah Akhundzada of the Taliban. The number of Uzbek fighters in Syria is estimated at approximately 500, with factions supporting either the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham (ISIS) or JN and allied groups. Imam Bukhari Jamaat has been involved in battles in Aleppo areas such as Leramoun and Zahraa.

The group originally operated only in Syria, where it is allied with other jihadist organisations such as al-Nusra Front and Ahrar ash-Sham, and alongside these other groups it makes up the Army of Conquest, which overran much of Idlib province in north Syria in 2015. Since late 2016, the group has also began to fight against Afghan National Security Forces, and has claimed to have set up training camps in northern Afghanistan.

The group is named after Imam Bukhari, a 9th-century Islamic scholar who was from Bukhara in modern-day Uzbekistan.

The group was led by an individual known as Sheikh Salahuddin, before his assassination in Idlib Governorate.
